The record invites us to consider everyday life alongside castles and inscriptions. Storing and distributing water means understanding a settlement as somewhere to cultivate, not only somewhere to defend.
Reading about Erciş grapes beside the vineyards recorded at Karataş brings food and archaeology closer together. Asking how water reached the growing land offers another way into the landscape.
Reading the present carefully
Although the inventory reports continuing use of some channels, it does not establish the present condition of each one. We therefore offer neither a list of working channels nor a walking route. An account of an ancient system does not prove that every channel visible in the landscape dates from the same period.
